In Lübbenau, the birthplace of Spreewald gherkins, they are made according to traditional recipes from high-quality vegetables in excellent quality water. The gherkin mile in Lübbenau offers the opportunity to taste Spreewald gherkins every summer. Lübbenau has been known as the ‘town of the boat trip’ since the middle of the 19th century. The Spreewald barge, which was indispensable for life at the time, was also used for excursions for the first time and the modern tourist barge trip began. Today, it is simply part of every visit to the Spreewald and the Spreewald village of Lehde is just a boat trip away. The poet Theodor Fontane once described it as ‘Venice in pocket size’ - an apt description for the village, which is characterised by a labyrinth of numerous water arms and islands, giving it a very special charm.there is an open-air museum in the centre of the village, which is one of the most photographed places in the world.
