SAINT-AYGULF, PLACE OF LONGING
Provence and the Côte d'Azur come together on the Mediterranean in the South of France. The special light of the blue coast meets blooming lavender fields and enchanting rocky villages with spectacular gorges. Artists such as Cézanne, van Gogh and Picasso were inspired to create their greatest works here.
Saint Aygulf is located between two other famous pearls of the Côte d'Azur: to the east, sophisticated Cannes with its famous La Croisette promenade, and to the west, the glamorous port town of Saint-Tropez, just 30 kilometers away. Saint-Aygulf impresses with its enchanting location at the foothills of the green Massif des Maures and the red Estérel mountains. At the top, hiking and cycling trails offer breathtaking views of the sea and the resort with its ochre-colored house facades. With around 300 days of sunshine a year, families in particular appreciate the fine, three-kilometre-long sandy beach.
Water sports enthusiasts also get their money's worth. Palm trees, pine trees and mimosas line the beach, which merges into the "wild coast" behind the marina. The hidden bays there, known as calanques, are home to beautiful bathing spots. The customs officers' coastal footpath connects the bays. It leads past the botanical Aréca Park with its oak grove. The nature reserve "Les étangs de Villepey" is unique and is home to more than 200 bird species, including flamingos.
Saint Aygulf is part of the Roman town of Fréjus with its interesting old town and the ruins of the amphitheater. The lagoon-like port is also worth a visit. Around the harbor basin, stores, bars and restaurants form the backdrop for the hustle and bustle of pleasure boaters, while the Aqualand water park offers a welcome change of pace for children. Saint Aygulf is also ideal for excursions or mountain bike tours with breathtaking sea views. In the hinterland, for example, the historic perfume town of Grasse beckons. Several factories there create fragrant essences. Visitors are surrounded by seductive clouds of perfume, motivating them to make a purchase. The trip there can be combined with a visit to the Grand Canyon du Verdon. The panoramic road along the 700-metre-deep gorge offers impressive views. The sun has now set. Beacons light up at the other end of the bay.
