Castelveccana, with about 1,800 inhabitants, owes its name to the two districts "Castello Valtravaglia" and "Veccana," which were administratively merged in 1928. Archaeological findings suggest that the first settlers in the 9th century BC were of Celtic origin. Later, the Romans took possession of the area. The name and history of the place are inextricably linked to the fortress "Rocca di Caldé," which was razed to the ground by the Swiss in 1513. High above the municipality rises the striking limestone rock with ruins and a lighthouse, which from a distance resembles the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro, and is therefore affectionately referred to as "Sugarloaf" by the locals. At the foot of the rock lies the picturesque fishing village of Caldé with its old romantic harbor, which, due to its Mediterranean flair, is also known as the "Portofino of Lake Maggiore." The area, favored by the mild climate, became increasingly a point of attraction for artists from all over the world from the 19th century onwards. Writers such as Stendhal, Manzoni, Flaubert, and even Hemingway fell in love with this spot of earth and always enjoyed returning. Caldé is known not only for its many international guests but also for the annual summer jazz concerts and the varied sports offerings.
