Due to its strategically extremely favorable location by the lake, Intra has always been subject to changing rulers throughout its history. The oldest district of Verbania (approx. 18,000 inhabitants) has its origins in Roman times and is first mentioned in documents in the year 1031, when the church of San Vittorio is listed as "in loco et fundo Intri". In the 12th century, Intra belonged to the Counts of Castello, who then had to cede the area to the Novaresi in 1270. They, in turn, built a fortified palace at a strategically advantageous point between the two lake tributaries, San Giovanni and San Bernardino, probably using the foundations of an old castle, which was already mentioned in 1270 as "castrum ruptum". Thus, the area around the present-day Piazza Castello is the historical core and the actual heart of Verbania. Even today, you can find "palazzi" from that era there. A stroll through the narrow and romantic alleys of the beautiful old town and along the well-kept lakeside promenade is always an experience. From Intra, you can take the car ferry to the other side of the lake to Laveno, or reach internationally known holiday resorts or areas such as Locarno, Ascona, Stresa, the Borromean Islands, Lake Orta, and Lake Mergozzo within about 30 minutes. A rich offering of culture, leisure, and sports opportunities offers something for every taste and thus ensures that there is no room for boredom.
